Parenting Advice

Practical parenting advice from 45 years of pediatric practice.

Free videos, the book, and one-on-one consultations. Everything in one place, in English, Spanish, and Arabic. Built for parents who want guidance that actually works in real homes.

There is no shortage of parenting advice on the internet. There is, however, a real shortage of advice that is rooted in actual experience with thousands of children, that respects how complicated families are, and that gives you something concrete to do tonight. That is what I have tried to build here.

The six pillars

The advice I give returns again and again to six pillars. They are not new, they are not gimmicks, and they hold up across cultures, languages, and ages. After 45 years in pediatrics, I am convinced that families who pay attention to these six end up with kids who can handle life.

  1. Communication. Talking to your child in ways that build trust, not fear. Listening with full attention. Asking real questions instead of giving lectures.
  2. Emotional intelligence. Helping your child name what they feel, sit with hard feelings, and recover from them. This is the single biggest predictor of long-term wellbeing.
  3. Discipline. Teaching, not punishing. Setting firm, age-appropriate limits with warmth. Using natural consequences instead of fear.
  4. Resilience. Letting your child struggle a little so they can learn they are capable. Not rescuing too quickly. Showing them how to recover from setbacks.
  5. Healthy self-esteem. Praising effort, not labels. Helping your child build a real sense of competence rather than a fragile sense of being special.
  6. Social skills. Coaching your child through friendships, conflict, and the everyday social work of being a kid in a group.

Available in three languages

Free YouTube videos are available in English, Spanish, and Arabic. Many families I have cared for over the years speak two or three languages at home, and good parenting guidance should not depend on which one you grew up with. Watch on the YouTube channel.

Frequently asked

How is this different from a parenting blog?
It is not based on one parent's experience or a writer's opinion. It comes from 45 years of pediatric and neonatal practice, fellowship training at UCLA, and direct work with thousands of families across many cultures and life situations.
Is the advice evidence-based?
It is grounded in long-term clinical experience with what actually works in real families, paired with current pediatric understanding of child development and emotional regulation. It is not academic theory, and it is not internet folklore.
What ages does this cover?
Infancy through the teen years, with a special focus on early childhood through middle school, the years when emotional foundations are being laid.
Where should I start?
If you have a specific issue, search the YouTube channel by topic. If you want the full framework in one place, the book is the best starting point. If you want to talk about your child specifically, book an online consultation.
Do you offer in-person care?
Dr. Solomon sees patients at Long Beach Family Clinic on Atlantic Ave. The online consultation service makes it possible to talk about your child even if you are not in Long Beach.
